　　Whilesurveyingatelegraphlinein1861,WesternUnionengineerEdwardCreighton(DeanJagger)isseverelyinjuredinanaccident.HeisdiscoveredbyVanceShaw(RandolphScott),anoutlawontherunfromaposse.Forcedtotravelonfootafterhishorsewashurt,ShawatfirstconsidersstealingCreighton&#39shorse,butchangeshismindandtakesthemanwithhim,savinghislife.　　Sometimelater,followinghisrecovery,CreightonreturnstoOmaha,NebraskaandplanstheconstructionofatelegraphlinefromOmahatoSaltLakeCity,Utah.FacingconsiderableoppositiontothelinefromConfederatesoldiers,Indians,andoutlaws,CreightonelicitsthehelpofhissisterSue(VirginiaGilmore),foremanPatGrogan(MinorWatson),andassistantHomerKettle(ChillWills).　　Lookingtoputhisoutlawpastbehindhim,ShawarrivesatCreighton&#39sWesternUnionofficelookingforhonestworkandishiredasascoutbyGroganwhoisunawareofhispast.Creightonrecognizeshimamongthemenandallowshimtostaydespitehissuspicions.CreightonalsohirestenderfootRichardBlake(RobertYoung),aHarvard-educatedengineerasafavortoBlake&#39sfather.ShawandBlakearebothattractedtoSueandvieforherattention,buttheirromanticrivalryiscutshortwhenconstructionofthetelegraphlinestartsonJuly4,1861.　　Afterworkcommencesontheline,oneofthemeniskilledapparentlybyamysteriousbandofcattle-rustlingIndians.UnconvincedthatIndiansaretoblame,Shawridesouttoinvestigateandfollowstherustlers&#39trailtothecampofJackSlade,aformerfriendandcohort,whosegangcommittedthekillingdisguisedasIndians—thegangShawleftfollowinghislastbankrobbery.SladerevealsthattheyareworkingfortheConfederacytodisruptWesternUnionbecausetheybelievethetelegraphservicewillhelptheUnion.Shawridesawayandreturnstotheline.Notwantingtoturninhisformerfriends,ShawtellsCreightonthatalargebandofDakotaIndiansstolethecattle,andrecommendsthattheysimplyreplacetheherdandnotriskafightwiththeIndians.　　Sometimelater,aconfrontationtakesplacebetweenmenworkingontheforwardlineandabandofdrunkenIndians.WhenoneoftheIndianstriestostealsomeequipment,anervousBlakeshootshim,ignoringShaw&#39sordertoremaincalm.AfterwordarrivesthatthemaincampisunderattackbyotherIndians,theWesternUnionmenrushbacktohelpwiththedefense.Atthemaincamp,Slade&#39smen,whoareagaindisguisedasIndians,stealtheWesternUnionhorses.ThecompanydiscovertherusewhenoneofthewoundedIndiansturnsouttobeawhiteman.ForcedtobuybacktheirstolenhorsesfromSlade,CreightonbecomessuspiciousofShaw&#39sinvolvement,especiallywhenheadmitstoknowingthegang.　　SoontheU.S.ArmyarrivesandannouncestheIndianshavenowrefusedtoallowthetelegraphlinestogothroughtheirterritoryinresponsetoBlake&#39sshootingofthedrunkenIndian.Creighton,Shaw,andBlakerideouttoconvinceChiefSpottedHorsetoallowthemtobuildthelinethroughIndianterritory,eventhoughthemanBlakewoundedwasSpottedHorse&#39sson.CreightonisfinallyabletopersuadetheIndianstoallowthempassage,andworkcontinuesuntilthecompanyapproachesSaltLakeCity.　　Sometimelater,ShawreceiveswordthatJackSladewantstomeetwithhim.OnthewaytoseeSlade,ShawiscapturedandboundbySlade&#39smen.SladesayshisgroupisgoingtoburndowntheWesternUnioncampandtheydon&#39twantShawtointerfere.AfterSladeandhismenrideoff,Shawescapesfromhisropesbutarrivesbacktoolatetopreventthefire.HehelpsrescuesomeoftheWesternUnionmenfromtheflamesandburnshishandsintheprocess.　　Afterthefire,CreightonconfrontsShawforanexplanation,butShawdoesnotrevealwhatheknowsandisfiredbyCreighton.AsShawleavesthecamp,hetellsBlakethatSladeisactuallyShaw&#39sbrotherandthathe,Shaw,willfindSlade&#39sgangandstopthemfrominterferingwiththetelegraphproject.ShawridesoffandfindsSladeandhismeninanearbytown.Atthebarbershop,Shawconfrontshisbrother,whosegunisconcealedunderthebarber&#39ssheet.SladeshootsShawthroughthesheet.Shawfightsbackinspiteofhiswound,killingsomeofthegangmembers,andthendies.BlakearrivesandcontinuesthefightwithSladewhodiesfromhiswounds.Soonafter,theWesternUnionlineiscompletedandtheworkerscelebrate.WhenSuelamentstheabsenceofShaw,CreightontellsherthatShawcanhearthem.
